What is Top - Dressing and why do does lawn needs it?

Sandblasting lawn sprinkling it with a thin layer (about 3-5 mm)of various material (sand mixed with peat substrate and other additives) dependent on the type of soil on which grass grows. The aim is to improve the physico - chemical properties of the soil:

  • in the case of a sandy ground, it improves the storage properties of the water, so that the lawn becomes more drought resistant
  • in the case of ground clay, will help loosen compacted soil - improve drainage, ensuring better developing conditions for roots.

Another benefit of top dressing is to smooth out small irregularities on the lawn, filling all the small cavities (up to 15 mm). Sandblasting lawn stimulates the production of new shoots of grass, causing thickening of the lawn, and it helps to fight weeds and moss.

Top - dressing, or "sand-blasting" is a routine lawn care, performed by professional Green Keeper 's to provide the highest quality lawn. If you want your lawn to create the best conditions for development, you should blast your lawn regularly once a year.

What mixture do we use for lawn top dressing?

Sanding using a mixture of three basic ground substrates: sand, peat and clay and other additives such as chalk or compost. The proportions of the components are dependent on the substrate on which lawn grows. Each blend is individually prepared depending on the needs of your lawn. We use only the best substrates free of dirt and weeds. On sandy soils we use rich mix of peat and clay substrate, and on heavy clay soils, vice versa -  the appropriate type of sand content of vast granularity.

How is lawn sanblasting performed?

The key to the proper implementation of this lawn treatment is to have the right equipment. Sandblasting with wheelbarrows, shovels and rakes does not work and to spread evenly 5 mm top layer - dressing, special equipment is needed. For best results, perform sandblasting after scarifying and aeration - a mixture of sand, peat and clay substrate reaches the soil faster and fill the holes created during aeration. In order to even spreading on the lawn, after lawn sanding, we also perform leveling procedure. Depending on the type of lawn use a dose of 3-5 kg ??per 1 square metre of the mixture, resulting in up to 500 kg 100m2/1ar.

When is the best to apply top dressing?

Performing this lawn care procedure does not have any strict requirements as to the date of implementation. We can carry substantially all of it in a year. Lawns growing on poor soils should be sanded once a year in a richer mix of peat substrate in order to improve the quality of the soil. Lawns founded on high quality soils rich in organic matter, do not need annual sanding, but if you want to achieve the best results, you can blast regularly once a year - preferably in the autumn from September - when grasses are best able to promote themselves.
